Critic Reviews for At Eternity's Gate
Dafoe fully commits to his performance, as does Schnabel to the painter's vision and humanity.
At Eternity's Gate mainly succeeds, dusting off a century's worth of global celebrity to both animate a suffering soul and rescue a radical artistic mission from the museum gift shop.
It's a story both ecstatic and tragic, and Schnabel is more interested in the former than the latter.
Dafoe adds another masterful performance to his resume; his work here is as deep and as piercing as his performance in "The Last Temptation of Christ" more than 30 years ago.
Dafoe may be the best actor around for expressing an inner life in extremis.
Audience Reviews for At Eternity's Gate
Every year there is one end-of-year prestige film by a director who has done notable, but somewhat under-the-radar work previously that I have no idea about given I haven't seen any of that under-the-radar work and this year that director is Julian Schnabel. "Now I just think about my relationship to eternity." It's easy to appreciate what Schnabel was going for in At Eternity's Gate, his introspective portrait of Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe), but I just had a more enlightening and emotionally affecting discussion about mortality with my four-year-old. Observes, but adds little to the conversation.
